The Municipality of Zitsa is composed from the municipal apartments of
Zitsas, Prwtopapa, Karitsa, Lithino and Dafnofyto and
includes also the settlements Sakellariko and Melissi.
According to the 2001 inventory the municipality has 2200 residents.
The Capital of municipality abstains 25 kilometres from the Ioannina.
The main occupation of the residents is the livestock-farming the viticulture while a small percentage is occupied in the excavation of marbles.
Enough however from them reside in the municipality and or work
in public services or they are occupied in the private initiative.
The Municipality has seat of Police Department, Notary's office,
anneces of County court, GREEK POST, GREEK TELECOME, while function
two kindergartens, two municipal schools, a high school and secondary
school orders.
It allocates Municipal Art gallery in which they are entertained a
line from known work that gave in his birthplace the known painter Kostas Malamas, and a cultural centre.
Monuments
From the more important monuments of municipality are
the monasteries of Prophet Elias, (1598) in the homonym
hill of Zitsa, the Abbey of Fathers of Lithino (1590) and Saint
Nikolaos' church in Karitsa (1591).
The first two was, in the past, very richly with huge fortune in
Vlachia and Russia. Today only the first is functional while the Abbey
of Fathers will be soon renovated after the approval of
financing with 250.000 Euros.
In the abbey of Prophet Eliasin the early 1800's was entertained
the known Lord Byron who, during his eve, wrote an important part of his poem "Adoration of Tsaild Harold".
Another important and famous natural monument is Theogefyro in the river Kalamas. A natural stone bridge which until a few decades ago constituted the passage between the villages across
Kalamas.
